The prediction of the end of the world in 2012 is not based on Nostradamus, it is because of the Mayan calendar rolling over to a new period on Friday. Rather like our calendar entering a new millennium or a car mileometer clicking on to the next hundred-thousand miles, when there will be a whole row of zeros for a moment.
As the Mayans didn't foresee any of the misfortunes that actually befell their civilisation, I don't think that any predictions made by them over a thousand years ago (their society ceased to exist around 900 A.D.) need concern us.
