I agree, crime always goes on the up when the economy is bad. At the moment, the US and world economies are recovering, but in certain places, the recession still has a hold. Robberies are occurring in hotels in fairly affluent metropolitan areas, but I dare say that the robbers come from places where the recovery and prosperity still hasn't started to flow yet. Until they do, people will still find themselves the victims of crimes, but usual tourist area or 'big city precautions' will help to minimise those chances. It is a question of common sense on the part of the potential victims.
Tourist states or towns have always suffered big for crime. Florida has been crime ridden for as long as I can recall; and that's a long, long time.
The people there should think like a thief.
