What you saw was another airliner, but heading in the opposite direction. Commercial planes travel over pre-set airways, kind like cars on the highways, only in three dimensions. The reason you don't see the planes heading in the opposite direction more often is because the combined speeds of the two planes is over 1000 knots. You would have to be looking in the right direction and at the right time to see it, and even then it would be gone in a blink of an eye.
The flashing red lights are there so that the other pilots would see the plane from far away. Every plane has them.
It's no surprise you didn't hear the plane. Think about it, the other plane was a couple of miles away; you were sealed in an airtight metal tube; your own plane's engines were humming merrily away practically right next to you; and you were traveling at over 500 knots. There was no way you would have heard the other plane.
I doubt that you were looking at your stop watch and the plane at the same time, so your claim that you were looking at the plane for 4 seconds should be taken with a grain of salt. You had poor lighting conditions at 5 a.m. and you only saw it for a few moments. With that limited data, you just jumped to a conclusion that this was a UFO. This is how all alleged UFO sightings happen, but they all have far less exotic explanations.

The United States Air Force possesses stealth fighters that are much smaller than the stealth bombers---but a whole lot faster. You were fortunate to get a glimpse of one. I'm jealous.
It would have been one of these Royal Air Force planes. I enclose a link and you can see they operate around Australia. Thats not American territory really.
I was travelling in an airplane on my way from Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur. it was around 5 a.m. (i think) i was reading a book while most of the passengers are sleeping. I stopped reading and look out the window for awhile. all the sudden I saw a triangular shaped black object with red lights on its front and back and white lights on the sides. it was travelling on the opposite direction and i looked at it for full 4 seconds. it was quite near but it was travelling lower than my airplane. but I can clearly see the object with red lights flashing on its front and back. at first I thought it was just a jet, but why didn't it have no sound? the moment i saw it went right by me it was completely silent. it looks like a stealth bomber but way smaller. i told my dad about it the moment I reached home. he said it wouldn't be possible for me to look at it for full 4 seconds unless the object is kilometers away. because my airplane is travelling at high speed and the object is on the opposite direction, so even if the object is stationary, i could only see it for a split second. but didn't, i saw it went clearly with no sound for full 4 seconds and it was definitely not more than a kilometer away. I don't normally believe in all the UFO sightings i read on the internet. so I'm not gonna say it IS a UFO. if its just one of the latest aircraft, that is one really high tech aircraft. so please, if you know any aircraft that matches my description. please please please reply me.
