Ignorance, irrationality & fear.
For one thing there won't be any "end times", but rather an end to the time as we know it. There will be an end to this Godforsaken world of poverty, famines, greed, & war. It will be an Armageddon but that's what it will take to end this miserable state we've brought ourselves to.
It's that lack of knowledge that brings some of the hype about.
There is a God and we are his creation. We live without Him now by our own volition despite the fact that He wants us to live the way He teaches us. We won't do that so He lets us go on about our own way freely till we come to the point of no return on this eve of destruction. Then He will step in and stop it all; that will be the end of times as we know it. Because after that He will rule and the world will be so much better than what we have made of it now.
Fear; because every mother's child is afraid of God. Some so much that they refuse to believe in Him and the result is a life without God's guidance. Which brings us to where we are now; in a quagmire of perdition and too few want to admit it and turn to God for guidance. Those who have are those who understand what the hype is all about, they are not ignorant about the end of these times, they have no fear as God's teachings involve Agape', a love for one another, and there is no fear in love.
