How were Vietnam veterans treated?

They were spat upon and called "baby killers" by their own people.

A most ashamedly honest answer is that Vietnam Veterans were, and are, treated like nothing at all. The knowledge of today -- PTSS, replacements for limbs, etc. was nowhere to be found during that period of time, so most of the 'illnesses' from war could not be medically represented nor utilized. Since, and after, everything had been swept under the rug, there remains little recognition of and for these Brave Men and Women of Honor. I honor them personally .... so someday, they'll know.

They were ignored by their government that sent them over to Vietnam....they became an embarrassment to the US government - who wanted to dissociate all memories of 'that failed lost cause' that cost the lives 10's of 1000's + the massive amount of lifetime injures to the service people....who all (stupidly) thought their government would provide for their needs and wants....'if they ever made it back home' + the 'billions' the Vietnam war cost the US taxpayers.!!

This is the huge problem with all western governments regarding war - they demand a fighting force is deployed on a political 'whim' - and when it becomes a 'lost cause' (as most of them do) its time for governments to 'side-step the whole issue' and abandon/forget the catastrophic personal injury damage done too the service people.

This has applied to every single US war conflict - Iraq/Afghanistan will be exactly the same....the cannon fodder (service peoples) was supplied and then ignored.!!

Just Google it - theres lots of info around.

The first Rambo film was based on a book written by a sociologist academic and based on the treatment of vets in small town America,Born on the 4th of July is about a crippled vet.

The sad truth is the returning soldiers were treated like dirt by the country they fought for also the vets had to wait for years for a monument to commemorate their sacrifices.

If you watch the first Rambo film pay attention to the small town sheriffs attitude to an American vet wanting to get something to eat in his town,it speaks volumes.

Hello from London England. They had a huge degree of mental illness as a result, PTSD a plenty. Just like our vets now. Used and abused and left to fend for themselves.

I don't know how they were treated back home in USA I'm from Australia

But there was a guy my family knew who was captured and he asked for food so they cut his calf muscle off cooked it and gave it to him.

Maybe if u asked military u could get an answer there? I've put a star on your question to see what answers u receive, cheers

Hello from Liverpool, England.

Hopefully this is being read in America as this question is aimed at Americans.

I have just seen a tv show that said that when those who fought in Vietnam returned home they were treated badly. According to the show, the beginning of the film Rambo accurately depicts how badly they were treated. Is this true?

Are there any films or tv shows that shows that show how they were treated? Can you point me in the direction of anything else that could explain what happened?

Thanks.
