Its the way its tied. Something you learn at your Mothers knee. I can well remember the night before my first day at school when I was 5 in 1949.
Mother made me tie and un-tie my school uniform tie so as I could do it myself. You get the thin end by knotting it at the thin end.
you guys need to move with the times!! ties for school are now made so you need not tie them just clip them on. stop showing your ages!! lol
