I see no reason that there would not be another planet-wide cataclysm some day.
There have been several massive extinctions of species in our planet's history, in which the vast majority of life was wiped out; but it was always followed by greater variety of species and complexity of ecosystems.
I have no idea what might happen after the next massive global cataclysm, since each one has been different so far.
If the cataclysm is thermonuclear devastation, I suppose it will involve an increased number of species able to synthesize energy using radioactive elements.
But the odds are against it happening too soon. We are headed for pretty big changes anyway, because so many species have been wiped out in the last century, and it is still going on. That means some big changes are coming.

The Ice Age did its best to freeze humanity into extinction.
A space rock big enough to cause a dino-killer style extinction level event could be hurtling our way even as we speak, missed by astronomers until it's too late just like that meteor that escaped detection until it exploded over Russia last year causing widespread damage and injuries.
Something like the Black Plague that murdered millions in medieval times could come out of nowhere to wipe out billions in our modern era.

Global warming could eventually kill us all with ever more extreme summers and winters.
So will another major world disaster ever happen again? Of course it will.
Will it wipe out the human race? Nobody knows. It all depends on what kind of disaster it is.
What can we do to prevent the human race from being totally wiped out?
That's simple: We quit wasting time and focus on getting off this damn planet and out into space.
And we don't stop at the borders of solar system either.
We spread ourselves as far out as we can get so that a cosmic catastrophe like a nearby star going supernova and exploding will only wipe out Earth and our solar system, not the whole human race.
Oh yes our planet has been in a disaster several times and probably will be again Now whether its a world disaster we can not know that until or if it happens.But no I don't think we will be peopled by anything other than more people.We have many safety features previous civilizations didn't have before.and better ways to survive it.With all our satellites and technology I am sure we will have plenty of warning no need to fear.

So I guess this is a weird question and I'm asking out of curiosity.
It's hard to explain so if you understand what I'm trying to say then please answer me.
You know things like the massive meteor that killed all of the dinosaurs... And the Ice Age happened, do we know if anything like that will happen again?
do we know if we will all be wiped out some day and a new species will take our place?
