Obama was left speechless by Romney's complete change of policies, because he came up with many new and different ideas which were all far more moderate than what he has said in the past.
Romney never mentioned any of his earlier more extreme campaign promises, which Obama had obviously studied, and for which he had planned contra arguments.
Because of this Obama had no starting point to attack him with.
These different policies would for sure have angered the far right in the Republican party, if they were intelligent enough to understand what he had said, that is.
But of course they'd have been far too dazzled by Romney's oratory skills which got one over on Obama, to actually notice what he said.
He actually promised a few of the Democrat's policies, for example self dependency on energy. And he also preached parts of their economic policy, as if these were new and his own ideas.
It is because of this that Obama was left speechless and stuttering.
Romney caught him completely off guard.
It became a total coup.
He was staring the truth in his face.
He also knew the answer Romney has for the 47% remark, and he did not want it known by all.

I thought that he just let Romney hang himself with his lies and
misrepresentations - which turned out to be the case, when some
fact-checking was done on Mitt's outrageous prevarications.
How many voters want a habitual liar in the White House?
After the debate I chalked up his deadful performance to poor campaign strategy. Playing the nice guy to make sure his likeability numbers remain high. A strategy that might seem reasonable but I am beginning to doubt it. Obama failed to capitalize on the 47% quote, and any number of things that could be attributed to Romney in a negative light. So, why such a blatant evasion of political common sense? Obamas advisors are too smart to have thought this strategy was a winner. It was as if Obama received some bad news that we will learn of soon enough. He wasn't at all himself. Something was on his mind and it wasn't Romney.
