He probably really believed his own religious doctrine that there is a reward in the afterlife for killing infidels. Plus like so many sociopaths, he was willing to risk a shortening of his earthly life for greater homicidal glory. From his perspective it was win-win.
he made a major mistake by thinking we would NOT retaliate, and just send a few cruise missiles like Pres Clowntin did in 1998 ? I believe.

Why did Bin Laden attack the American soil if he can be sure that the U.S would retaliate with something big like 'War on Terror' waging war all over the Middle East at the cost of his own brothers.
Also the hunt for Al-Qaeda would be spearheaded and all.
Why not just carry on his low-profile bombing and stuffs?
