What is going on in Ukraine?

I normally pay a lot of attention to world news, but I don't understand what the situation in Ukraine is all about, so can anyone explain it to me in an easy way?

I have not taken a lot of notice of it either.but have taken a bit more interest in the past few days. As far as I can see the government want closer ties with Russia, while many others want Ukraine to join the EU. The EU are talking of putting sanctions on the rebels.

The independent successor state of the former Soviet Union [Ukraine] is undergoing immense internal stifling and civil mayhem between belligerents primarily originating from the Western most regions of Ukraine. This dissension into civil disorder is embroiled between Ukrainian "Ruthenian" demonstrators advocating a closer economic and diplomatic relationship with the European Union at the dismay of the predominating Pro-Russian collaborationist Viktor Yanukovych administration, which allegedly the majority of Ukrainians are already complacent with. Despite the profuse pleas by the protesters to perhaps revise Ukrainian's candidacy for EU "incorporation" (which Russia will never idly tolerate), there is equally significant opposition favoring the status quo being more aligned with the Russian Federation, a fellow East Slavic "Rus" state. The awareness and utter civil morbidity caused from this Euromadian upsurge has disseminated across the world. Interesting of fact earlier today, I saw a small congregation of "Ukrainian-Americans" preaching solidarity with the dissenters in Ukraine and were distributing leaflets to random bystanders (most of whom probably indolent to their plights...or gobsmacked temporarily and then focus on issues of meager/trivial importance ).

Kiev's scorching, clashes fluctuating, Ukrainian law enforcement are brutally and somewhat callously suppressing/apprehending some of the demonstrators (many of these overzealous provocative loons probably warranting it), some what 37 people perished and 1,600+ injured?, inept President Obongo is threatening sanctions (BS), and Russia's ex-KGB cult of personality leader is admonishing the West not to intervene. Basically to abbreviate, Kyiv's current state is detrimentally bleak. Quite unfathomable how his spiraled out of control. I do sincerely sympathize with the plights civilian population, they shouldn't bear the burden of the hooliganism ensuing in their nation.

In a very basic nutshell, Ukraine has not been on very good terms with the Kremlin since they split from the old USSR. Now Moscow does not want them to join Europe, and the troubles are the straw that broke the camel's back.

Conflict.
