Chernobyl was a nuclear power plant, basically they used elements like uranium which are highly radioactive and unstable to create energy. The process is quite simple, make uranium really unstable by firing a neutron at it, which would force the uranium to split in to smaller, more stable elements. When splitting the uranium releases neutrons, and so on hits other uranium elements and a chain reaction occurs. The power plant in chernobyl wasn't the safest of places, they were testing out the power plant and shut off many safety procedures to see if wouldn't blow up essentially. To keep the reactor safe, control rods are used which basically absorb neutrons once lowered in the nuclear material, this slows down the reaction because the neutrons will not hit other uranium elements and continue the chain reaction. Now in the Chernobyl disaster I think the control rods didn't fall in because there was a power cut or something so reaction just kept going and going and reactions got faster and hotter, the reaction caused an explosion and radiation was leaked everywhere.

they were carrying out an experiment and safety features were being turned off and bypassed to make the experiment possible. There's huge scientific and technical details at wikipedia and elsewhere on the web, but in essence the reactor went from generating a low amount of power to a huge amount of power very quickly. The reactor had a design flaw, and attempts to shut it down initially caused it to generate even more power. In a very short amount off time the reactor caught fire and boiled cooling water within itself causing an explosion. It wasn't a nuclear explosion as in an atomic weapon, it was a normal explosion but radioactive material was spread around the area.
