Were the Olympics overrated?

I am not a sports fan,but it was a great British achievement that we will trumpet to the world, like your Americans do. Is there a touch of jealousy.perhaps?

Given the cr@ppy job that NBC has done with covering the Olympics over the past 20 years, it's no surprise that you, like many other Americans, don't see what the big deal is.

The Olympics is about coming together as a planet to celebrate sportsmanship and competition. It's not just about seeing your fellow countrymen competing but watching the best competitors in those areas from around the world, or about cheering on an underdog such as the Jamaican bob-sled team.

Unfortunately, NBC is only concerned with promoting American athletes so NBC can get a headstart on raking in the cash from the athletes' commercial endorsements. This is why they spend so much of their coverage running those utterly stupid and pointless documentaries about the athletes to help build the hype because if the athlete actually wins, it means millions of dollars for NBC in the form of additional advertising revenue generated by larger audiences. Never mind that NBC actually shows the least amount of coverage of the actual games than any other country in the world. Yay! USA! USA!

I blame the media when they hype up those types of sports like the mile or 100 metres swimming or running to drag the big crowds in and then only include their country races where they have a chance to bring home the Gold and I don't care which country you are in.

They need to squeeze every penny they can get out of it to recoup some of the millions it cost, and I really wonder if you will every be told the true cost of the security by not only the security company who handle it but that of the Police, the Armed Forces and goodness knows what ever else that they don't mention like several Intelligence agencies.

No. if anything it was underrated. It's not often we can say we got it right and did well. The Olympic Games in London will be a hard act to follow, allows us our moment of glory.

No they were brilliantly successful.

Plenty of nay Sayers must are that....the were eagerly predicting a flop.

Yes, they always are.

Does anyone else find the whole Olympics 2012 is dragging on a bit now. They're squeezing everything out of it and it's getting boring now. It's in the past; let's move on.

Were they overrated for what they actually are? A few people running round a track to boost their own ego and so they can walk away feeling happy about themselves?
