Should john massey be set free?

John Massey escaped a UK prison yesterday.

Should he be set free once caught?

Well not set free at once. But he has been in prison for a long time.Perhaps there should be an appeal?

He committed a brutal act in his twenties. I am not familiar with his state of mind at that time nor the factors surrounding the incident. There may have been socialised violence as a resort to settling differences within his culture then, this may have been modelled to him in the 70's. He may also have had alcohol/drug issues. He has been in prison for a very long time and I do not know about his behaviour whilst in prison. That said, he handed himself in after his father's death, he didn't after his sister's death and remained with his mother but I guess that he couldnt take losing his mother aswell after so long in prison and wanted to be with her. This doesn't really sound like a man who remains a violent person, BUT again I don't have all the facts. I do, however, know that some prisoners remain in prison far longer than their original sentence even with good behaviour, they slip through the net seemingly unnoticed. So I summise that it was the nature of the crime back then that he still is incarcerated. My own opinion is that he should be assessed and released after a 12 month aclimatisation/rehab programme to enable him a) to live in society again after such a long time in prison and b) for trained staff to assess his emotional/psychological responses to triggers of his aggression. If the latter fails, he shouldn't be released. If he is assessed thoroughly, presenting all trigger situations on the outside and his resulting responses are tested as satisfactory, he should be released under supervision until it becomes no longer neccessary.

Edited to add: A guess but he's in his 60's, is his mother still alive? Or unwell? There is a pattern of escape in his prison history and it is always due to a relative dying ...

He murdered a night club bouncer in 1975, he has been released before but he breaks his parole conditions and ends up back in prison.

from the description u gave, it didn't seem as if he committed any crimes. except escaping a prison, but he shouldn't have been there anyway!

No ! He's a wrong 'un !
