Is john Major a closet socialist or the last compassionate conservative?

If he were a true socialist he would be pushing for the renationalisation of the energy companies. But he does sound to be talking compassionately for a Tory, and not spouting the usual "free market competition" line.

When Sir John Major was a PM he was a dick head. Just because he is now an ex PM does not make him wise and worth listening to. He is now an older dick head but not a wiser dick head.

The windfall tax that he proposes is an out of date solution for a different world that no longer exists.

The reason we and the democratic western world are in economic trouble is unimaginable levels of debt. This debt is not the fault of the banks it is the fault of an inherent flaw in democracy itself.

Bribing voters with such goodies as windfall tax and price freezes distorts and ultimately destroys the markets. The gap between tax revenue and public spending has yawned ever wider and has been bridged with ever increasing borrowing.

Austerity is the only way out and it can be steady and controlled if painful or catastrophic default and depression. Intervention is the royal road to depression and ruin.

Milliband is a bigger dick head than Major because his answer is to dig down when we are already in a hole.

Major. Wasn't he the one who introduced VAT on fuel bills! Get rid of this and the Green Tax and people fuel bills would not be so high. All the while China is pumping out pollution from it's coal fired power stations, what we produce is a drop in the ocean but we are being penalised by the tree huggers who believe this country is polluting the air. 1% in the whole world by the way.

No ,he's just somebody who doesn't have to deal with the realities of the situation which is expecting the energy companies to invest billions in new power stations while at the same time keep themselves solvent. We are paying now for labours 13 years of neglect, there are no votes in new power stations so they just passed the problem down the line.

John can say anything he likes without the responsibility of carrying it out. Its the vast profits of the energy companies that guarantee high prices, before anything else is even considered. I am a strong opponent of excess profits that take from the people and give to share holders. If they were nationalised that profit could be distributed among the needy public.

In food. Tesco makes several billion in profit. Even a tiny slither of that could half food prices.

The Tories have always used "Competition as a way to reduce prices. But it doesn't work as they all charge the same.

John Major is the nearest thing at the moment to a true Conservative, albeit a liberal one!

It does sound sensible doesn't it.....

Makes you wonder what Red Ed was thinking when he said he'd freeze energy prices and caused all the preemptive price rises occurring now....!

Well had he won in 1997 there would be no minimum wage and kids would be back up the chimneys.

He's just jumping on the 'Bandwagon', it's 'Toothless Speak'.

so he has called for a windfall tax on the energy companies to help the people who are struggling to pay their heating bill's.

this is so far removed from today's conservative party he is almost a socialist in their eyes.

Or he is the last compassionate conservative.
