I was working at a home for disabled people at that time, and we (the staff) went out into the storm to evacuate them from their bungalows, two of which had trees fallen on them. The wind was really scary, and you had to bend double to even move one step at a time. Also I remember the noise being unlike anything I had ever heard... it was 'unearthly'. Although the home was only two miles from the local town centre, we were cut off for two days as it had been a heavily wooded area, and there were fallen trees everywhere.
Ironically, there was another slightly less savage hurricane in North Wales in 1989 and guess who was caught in it when visiting friends on Anglesey?... Yup. Me! I just hope tonight won't compare to either of them.
Yes, I had theatre tickets for Miss Saigon and couldn't go. A tree had blown down blocking the bus route. In the middle of the night I looked out of the window to see the car trailer in the middle of the road and ran out to anchor it. I was bent double against the wind.
The following morning, two of my students told me they had woken up to find themselves staring at the sky because they lived in an attic and the tiles has blown off, the ceiling has become sodden and caved in.
Kew Gardens was a real tragedy to see with so many trees ruined. Dustin lids were really hard to locate and throughout the night we could hear them clattering along the road.
I was going to say, don't you mean 1987?
But as it happens nope. Slept right through the whole thing.
I vaguely remember it from when I was very young. But face it, we don't get extreme weather here. There are people in Florida laughing right now about how this is a big deal,
Today(28 October 2013), there is a hurricane do you remember the 1987 one?
