I've lived here 10+ years now, go to the beach every single day, and have NEVER seen a shark in the natural state. Not once. I've seen them on fishing lines and in displays but never in my ocean.
That's not to say they aren't there - maybe I don't taste good. It's the ocean, it IS a shark haven because guess where sharks live -- in the ocean. It's their house. Jellies and Man-o-War live in there too. Assorted fishes, some that bite. Crabs... lot's of crabs. Sea turtles too. It's where they live. I've lived the majority of my 50 years on the ocean all around the world and guess what... there's sea life in those oceans too. It's where they live.
Now, Myrtle Beach gets 14 million (yes, million) visitors per year who mostly come between June and August. We have 90,000 hotel rooms on this beach with 1600 places to eat. It's the leading tourist destination in the region. When you put 14 million people in the wildlife's house, someone is going to get bitten/stung/etc... It's inevitable. But, most people don't. In fact, very few do or nobody would come.
Most people who have a problem here had one because they think they know more than a lifeguard who spends every day on that beach or that the red flags don't apply to them because they're special. Those same people think our traffic lights and speed limits don't apply to them either. Bad decision on their part.
It is absolutely true that your odds of winning the lottery here are higher than your odds of encountering a shark that isn't in an aquarium or on a fishing line. And, how likely do you really think it is you'll win the lottery?
I Live around the ocean area. No its not that dangerous. Unless you are just coming to have fun, then you are fine. But if your gonna mess around with drugs, and **** like that. Then your getting yourself into bad.So just come and chill its fine. Noone will kill you, or rape you. SO its not bad, its very chill. A lot of fun places and very cheap!
Just as with Atlantic City, you don't wander around at night especially alone.
not to my knowledge and i visit often.
I heard that Myrtle Beach is a big vacation spot. But I've also heard that it's a shark haven. Is this true?
