First off: The US is not going to invade Iran because there's absolutely no need to.
The United Nations will decide that sanctions & diplomacy have failed to stop Iran's nuke program.
The UN will then order an air power only military intervention like it did with Libya because air strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities are all that's necessary to stop Iran's nuke program.
And like with Libya, the US will be one of the countries that the UN calls upon to participate in a multinational military intervention force.
Secondly: Russia won't interfere with a UN mandated intervention to defend Iran.
That's because Iran is insanely planning a global jihad to rule the world.

Russia won't defend a country that intends to attack and conquer Russia.
Thirdly, the US is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
NATO is the most powerful military alliance in human history.
NATO's treaty considers an attack on member as an attack on the whole alliance.
Russia lost the Cold War (and its Soviet Empire) because it wouldn't risk war with NATO.
It's not going to risk war with NATO when Russia's militarily weaker than during the Cold War.
Especially in light of the fact that NATO's stronger than during the Cold War era from having admitted new nations that've swelled NATO's ranks to a total of 28 countries.
That's why not Russia or anyone else will defend Iran if the UN orders air raids.
It's guaranteed suicide for any country stupid enough to attack a NATO nation.

Russia wont do anything. If the Mighty Soviet Union blinked first in such crisis as Cuba in 1962 I don't think Russia will do anything.
If Iran is thought a danger to world peace by the UN and the international community some police action may have to be carried out,but I dare say Russia may veto any UN action?
No, they don't really have the resources and wouldn't want to face a possible military embarrassment to save Assad. It would be much more likely for them to simply sell Assad weapons, take what little money they have, and hope for a protracted military engagement to bog down the US. Also, they will likely try to use this as leverage against the NATO missile shield, possibly for a Russian partnership in the matter so they can try to make sure that the technology won't be used against them.
NO they will side with China, communist China.
