What causes media violence? I do not understand the question?? Media violence is not caused, it is reported.
Do you mean what is the cause of so much violence in films and TV? Well, the answer to that is simple.... it is a reflection of society's intrinsic value system. Sometimes it is shown to demonstrate inherent flaws and other times to glorify violence as systemic of a societal norm. It really depends on what you're viewing... a PBS documentary or a gory movie.
There is what is known as 'useful violence'. Useful violence is used to prevent greater suffering than would occur if no violence was used. You see this when Mr Bush liberated Iraq. Yes it was tragic that people died, and there was suffering, but you need to balance this against the suffering of Iraqis under sanctions, and their suffering under the Government that ran that country before it was liberated. An example of 'criminal violence' can be seen in Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, Iraq could argue it had a legal claim to Kuwait, maybe, but the homes that were destroyed and the lives lost could never justify such destruction. Another example could be seen in Iraq's attack on Iran with the shocking loss of lives on both sides, what could justify such suffering? Another example of 'useful violence' can be seen in the American Air Raids on Vietnam. An American Negotiator with Vietnam explained his reasons for endorsing Air Attacks; 'It became necessary, however distasteful it was, to apply pressure in the form of Air Raids to end the stagnant situation we were locked in. We presented our case as reasonably as we could. We had spent 100 days in negotiations and achieved not one single advancement in talks. Within 3 days of pressure being applied in the form of Air Attacks, again however distasteful we found this, we able to resolve many impasses in negotiations'. All decent people want to avoid violence and suffering, but the Human condition seems to make this impossible.
Violence is not the answer to anything. That is what I think of it.
