Gas prices in year 1971?

Yup that's true I was there and not only that but you could buy a brand new car for just under (Japanese) or just over (American) 2000.00 but keep in mind at the time a guy making 100.00 a week was doing pretty well. I was making 70.00 and pretty proud of it. My dad, when he was 20 in 1938 said gas was .10 then and a new car 763.00 but the average annual income was 145.00 a month. Isn't progress wonderful?

I remember a sign sticking above the flood waters from former Hurricane Agnes in Highspire, PA at an ESSO (now Exxon) station reading 25.9 cents per gallon although that was a year later.

Min wage was $2.20/hr in 1975 and I made about $300/week just out of high school as a waiter in a coffee shop so I think Pete's memory is a bit faded.

People don't realize that the world has changed so much in 40 years. Now the cars are more expensive and need more gasoline to run.

Also, people have become more stuck up and need a lot more things in their daily lives than the basic necessities: food, shelter, clothes.

I would like to thank the answerers above for their first account stories. I am only twenty-four years old, so I don't know what it was like in those days, but I'm a history buff.

I think it was around 30 cents per gallon in my area. Minimum wage was <1.65/hr. The gas prices doubled as a result of the oil crisis in 1973.

Putting that into perspective, if you are now making ~$10/hr starting out in today's workforce, then gas should be ~$4/gal

About 30 cents a gallon. The cars were bigger and a lot more fun. Life was so much better then.

Cost of a gallon of regular gas: $0.36
