Can someone explain the Guantanamo Bay situation to me?

The US caught some prisoners in Afghanistan I think it was. If they had been in the uniform of a foreign country, they could have been detained as prisoners of war. Since they were suspected civilian freedom fighters against American troops, they could only be held legally in the US if they were given a trial. Bush lawyers circumvented the law by holding them in Guantanamo, Cuba, not on american soil. where they have been for years. Although they are suspects, some have been released because they did nothing, and others are being held indefinitely. Because of the hopeless situation of the inmates, many are resorting to attempting suicide. Refusing to eat is one method. They are prepared to die rather than face more years there.

The U.S. leases a portion land in Cuba, it has leased this land from Cuba for years and years. So U.S. are "over there" leagally and just so happens that U.S. put up a military base on that land in Cuba. Thats where the prison is, on a U.S. military base in Cuba. Follow so far?

So now Im just gonna go basic because there is alot of extra stuff to this whole story that would make up a novel....

There are a hundred and some detainees in Gitmo that are there because of terrorist acts, plots, and or affiliations. They claim that thier rights are being violated. So to gain attention some have volunteered to go on a hunger strick. This has been going on since like Feb. The medical staff in the prison are tube feeding those that will not eat. The ones that are not eating are claiming that it is thier right and if they die then it is on the U.S. government. The U.S. government claims that they can not stand by and do nothing while someone starves themself to death, so medical doctors have called the shots and are tube feeding the people so they will stay alive. And thats it in a nut shell and as where it stands now with this hunger strick thing.

Internment without trial. All the prisoners are not terrorists, they are alleged to be terrorists. Until justice is seen to be done, as is the right of any human being, they are presumed innocent. Unless of course the country holding them does not believe in justice,in due process? To deny anyone their basic human rights is as far removed from democracy as you can get. Add torture to the mix and you have a regime not so very far away from Naziism. I'm not saying they are all innocent , I'm saying it's high time any innocent ones were given the opportunity to prove it. Even totally innocent ones who were previously released were given their freedom with strings attached, many mentally scarred by their ordeal, for shame.

The fact that Americans continue to accept this crime against humanity shows that the spirit of the American constitution is long dead. If Americans can be so accepting of Guantanamo can they really complain when their own rights start to dwindle in the name of the war on terror? You cannot hold yourselves up as the poster boy for freedom and justice while Guantanamo exists.

Bunch of terrorists got caught. The federal government couldn't find a state willing to take them into their prison system, so they put them on the US military base in Cuba.

Frankly, I don't see why we care if the filth refuses to eat. Give them food, if they decide to starve themselves.. it just makes the world a better place.

People like you are the problem not the solution.

I just watched a video on youtube of Yasiin Bey (aka Mos Def) being "force fed under standard Guantánamo Bay procedure". It was kind of disturbing. But (I know I may sound ignorant) I don't really know what the situation is when it comes to Guantanamo Bay. Why are people refusing to eat? And why is the US over there? I really don't know anything. I tried googling it but there was just so much info I got confused. So if someone could give me the "Guantanamo Bay For Dummies" version that would be spectacular.
