British flag and Scottish Independence?

Our Union flag,or jack as its better known is one of the best known and most respected national emblems on earth. That coloured bit of rag has stood for freedom for many a long century. Through a world war she was all the oppressed people had to remind them there was an Island fortress across those seas where the dignity of man was still protected.

We certainly arent going to change her in any way. The blue can stand for the sky or for the sea where we have found our greatest glory many times.

It's not called the "British flag". It's called the Union Jack or Union Fag.

The Union flag, or what eventually became the Union flag, was developed long before the political Union of the UK. The Union it was developed for was the Union of the Crowns in 1606 - to begin with it was simply called the Flag of Great Britain - originally the royal banner of the King. However after political union in 1707 it eventually became the national flag of the political entity known today as the UK. The design was changed in 1801 to incorporate the red cross of St Patrick.

Scottish Independence will not end the Union of the Crowns. The Queen of England, N. Ireland and Wales will still be the Queen of Scotland after Independence. So the Union flag could still be used to represent all of the Queen's kingdoms - as her royal banner (the way it was used before political union).

However, whatever the remaining UK countries decide to use as their national flag is up to them. They might change the design or they might just keep it the way it is. No one knows what will happen. I don't see how using the old flag would be politically incorrect - after Independence there will still be many Scots who will still live in the rest of the remaining UK.

I doubt whether changing the union flag will be a priority even if Scotland does leave.

Just take the blue out the flag and you will have your answer.

Well, the blue will be gone; the Union Jack will just be white and red, I guess.

There will be no 'yes' vote. We can sympathise with Scottish patriots who love their country and hoped for independence, but every pole so far, (no pun intended) say emphatically Scotland will vote to stay in the UK. Let's just hope Scottish patriots accept the situation with grace.

They probably won't bother changing it.Congratulations on living in Poland by the way.If alex salmond gets his way you might have to make room for a couple of 100 thousand scots.

I'm Polish and live in Poland. But i wonder what the British flag would be look when Scotland leave UK.

When i learned English as foreign language in school, we have lesson about British flag, we learned English in it's British version, the teacher told us that UK flag symbolize union between England and Scotland.

So i ask what new British flag would be look, because using old one would be little politically incorrect, don't you agree:-)
