Perhaps on 12:01am 2012.12.21 the Earth was destroyed, but the Martians made a backup copy of Earth and its habitants, and replicated an exact copy of the Earth, called "Earth (2)", simultaneously as the original Earth was destroyed.
Or nothing happened at all.
