Why most who died on the great liner Titanic were ?

In 1912, Edwardian Britain was still very class conscious. The man priority of the crew was to look after the 1st class passengers and they would have been let into the boats before any other passengers. Many crew members died as they were even lower than Steerage passengers in the pecking order so

pity the poor stokers who found their way up on to the deck only to be ordered down below again thus meeting certain death

The Titanics loss of life highlighted the class system at it's worse and along with WW1 helped to do away with it. We still have the upper class nobility but the attitude has changed a lot today towards people `below' them.

By the way the Indian caste system is a lot worse than the class system this country used to have and is still in place today.

3rd class passengers were treated like animals when it came to the sinking, while the some but not all of the first class passengers were put into half filled boats, in general, due to the class system i suppose, the first class got to the best of everything including the spaces on the lifeboats

I was about 12 when I saw the film ~A night to remember~ which is all about the Titanic and its hubris and class society.

I didn't sleep well that night as I was reliving the sinking all over again and the poor sods who died because of stupidity.

But there is no use getting upset for long over something that happened that far back.

The monument in Belfast is the last one to be erected before WW1, it is in strict class order.

All the monuments to the fallen of WW1 were in alphabetical order ~Farmers sons rubbing shoulders with squires sons in the great equality of death~ Alan Bennett, Forty years on.

That was then this is now.

Lenes answer is correct and in the 1900's people `knew their place' in society. I presume that you saw last nights excellent Titanic on ITV2. See how the Countess looked down her nose at the couple who were `trade'. The couple in question owned a chain of chemist shops and were far richer than the Countess and her husband but they were still considered inferior as they were the new rich and old money people were established in society and looked up to.

because they were further from the outside decks where the lifeboats were, it took them time to get up from the lower decks to the muster points.

Other than that, there is obvious stuff like richer people being deferred too, which still happens now, but was even more the norm in the past

actually 1 child from 1st class died. most were 3rd class as whiteheart line considered 1st class as more important - more likely to use their ships often. and also there wasnt enough life boat

Could be thats why so many blacks were grateful, David G. All the people who suffered where not of their origin, so don't you worry - as I suspect in times like this, even a great many of them will always look forward to films about it also!

Nothings changed its just the same shi* but a different day.

Only difference now is they dont even pretend to give a fu"k about the "third class".

And they never will till the great "unwashed" stand up and fight for themselves.

Didn't you see the movie? They locked them in so they wouldn't rush the few lifeboats that were available for the rich handing out money to get a spot on a boat.

Isn't it a bit late to feel outrage over the Titanic?

3RD Class passengers and Even CHILDREN of the third class died while NO 1st or 2nd class children died.

What a class ridden liner this Titanic was.......

The liner was divided into 1st ...2nd and 3rd class passengers and so considering the 3rd class were migrants no wonder they were left to die....
