The U.S. has maintained a military presence in the Middle East for years. Osama bin Laden took exception to the pagan U.S. presence, power, and influence in the region and bankrolled a plot to strike the very essence of U.S. might and principles; capitalism, democracy, and a strong military.
The attack was focused on the World Trade Center towers, representing "evil" capitalism; the Pentagon, representing "The Great Satan" military headquarters; and the Capitol Building, representing democracy. All these things are against Sharia Law, when indulged upon.
The idea was to strike at the head of the snake, and let the people become fearful enough to demand the U.S. get out of world affairs the Muslim world deemed none of our business.
Perhaps it was none of our business before 9/11, but it's our business now. Before, it was more a matter of national interest, but now it is a matter of national security.
Did it work? Yes and no. The U.S. is more involved in the Middle East than it ever was and this will continue. We are less free today than we were before 9/11. We have bloated deficits from both Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts (necessary at the time, in my opinion); an increase in government size, power and control over our people for safety and security sake; a self-inflicted financial bubble blowing up in our face; an inadequate solution such as stimulus packages, quantitative easing, bailouts, printing money, borrowing more money from China, contantly increasing jobless benefits, increased regulation which chokes business activity, punishing savers, not letting the market find the bottom of the housing market, etc.
The greatest financial power in the world is beginning to implode, leaving us broke and relying on the kindness of strangers (holders of our debt). We will eventually no longer be able to afford our military and may be surpassed as the world's premier military power. Our currency is becoming worthless.
Radical Islam did not do this to us...we did it to ourselves.
The people behind the 9/11 attacks were brainwashed into an Islamic cult controlled by Osama Bin Landen. They were so brainwashed they thought God was talking to them rather than the any of the other 7 billion people or 1 billion muslims on this planet. Once they were brainwashed they became slaves who blindly followed orders, and the orders were to attack the US so 9/11 happened.
Muslim extremists believe that it is their duty to eradicate Christianity and "evil" western culture from the face of the earth. For example, the religious leader of Iran described America as the "Great Satan." Whether people want to face the fact or not, these extremists don't have "separation of church and state" and so this is a religious issue. 9/11 was just an example of radicals trying to flex their muscle.
Islam extremist just wanted their voices to be heard and have a genuine hate for Americans.

i know its been years, i was in 4th grade when it happen. im just wondering what their reasons were behind it all. why do these muslim extremist and al quieda cant hate westerners and America especially. i know we have troops over in Afghanistan and Iraq before, but there were issues before that.
