Where were you on 9/11?

I was in 4th grade. The teachers didn't tell us anything and tried to just continue on with the day as if nothing was wrong. I guess they didn't want to scare us since we were younger, plus we were close to the Pentagon and they may have been afraid that someone in the school could have had parents who worked there. But, we all could tell something was going on because as much as they were trying to hide it, the teachers were still acting strange, and then a lot of kids started getting picked up early. My parents figured I was safe in the school, so they left me there, but when I finally got home that afternoon I watched the news with them and my mom explained what happened.

In 2001, I was dating a women who lived in Linden, NJ. The week before 9/11, we attended a 5 day event in Philadelphia and I was staying at her place for the week after that event. On 10 Sept, I was in Manhattan, visiting some of my fav bookstores in the city. I was as far south as Broadway and 8th St. At about 6:30 PM, I took the PATH train from Manhattan to Linden.

The next morning, she had to go to work, and she let me sleep in. I woke up at about 8:50 AM, and since I saw it was near to the top of the hour, I turned on the TV to CNN, expecting that at the top of the hour, the top stories would be reported on. This was just about five minutes after the first impact, so they were already reporting on that event. As I watched, it was clear to me that the aircraft that had hit had to be a large passenger jet, as having visited the Twin Towers earlier that year, I had a very good sense of their size. And, in the minutes before the 2nd place showed up, the view of the North Tower's impact point showed clear evidence of the width of the wings of the aircraft that had hit it.

Then, when the second plane hit the second tower at 9"03, no further question remained.

I continued to watch the coverage on CNN, and thus I saw the towers come down live. In between the first and second collapse, my g/f called me from the high school at which she was a teacher, and asked me for an update, as she wasn't seeing any TV, and the school was on an information lockdown, to avoid panicking the kids. I brought her up to speed as briskly as I could, and she went back to her students.

Later, after both towers were down, I walked over to the nearby public library to be able to get online and check my e-mail. My g/f did not have Internet access in her apartment. That allowed me to find out some of the related news from my home area in Canada.

That night was additionally strange, as where the apartment was, was within the landing patterns for Newark Airport, and with no planes flying, the absence of any aircraft sounds as eerie.

I drove home on the 20th, and when I was about to take the bridge into Canada, there was a temporary US military checkpoint where they inspected all vehicles wishing to leave the US. After passing that inspection, I crossed the bridge and then entered through Canada Customs.

I was only 2 years old at that time

Why do so many people feel it is so important to know what total strangers were doing on a particular date that this has to get asked so many times?

On my way to work, I was picking up my friend in our car pool when the second Tower was hit.
