7-11 stores first appeared in the Southwest about 1965. All the stores sold gasoline at that time. Their competitor, Circle K appeared about the same time. Although many 7-11s stayed open 24 hours, they retained the trade name because it was a name the public was already familiar with.
It opened at 7am closed at 11pm hence the name
