a company of the infantry during the first world war was around 220 full establishment, and your grandfather was the senior NCO in one of the four companies of the 1st Bt EY. His job would include many roles but battalion command liaison and the NCO's under him being his main reason for being. for instance in an attack he'd be in touch with Battalion HQ reporting to the RSM about the state of the men and any needs they may want, extra ammunition, field services etc. as reported to him by his NCOs.
note tactical considerations would always go through the officer command chain however.
I believe CSM stands for company sergeant major. These were brave non commissioned officers who played an imporrtant role in keeping up the discipline of the troops both on and off the battlefied.
Like IVOR has pointed out, he was a Company Sergeant Major. A non commissioned officer, who could under certain circumstances accept a Commission in the rank of Captain. Classed as the disciplinarian of his company, who in most cases had the full support and trust in his command and was the leader of the "Band of brothers".
