Oh the ignorance of people on YA. I would imagine it is an Afrikaans word of endearment. Probably the same as 'baby'. Lots of people call their boyfriend / girlfriend 'baby' or 'babe'.
I suppose if he had a pet name for her it might mean something ? It might be a South African term of endearment or something ?
