When 9/11 happened I was at work. I was 15 and worked in at the Cincinnati zoo. Everyone stopped what they were doing. Televisions were brought out of buildings and everyone stopped to watch. Many families were in tears because of relatives and friends they feared were dead. We watched on the tv as the buildings went up in smoke. Watched countless people jumping from so high up in the building to the ground they knew death waited for them. They just preferred to have a hopefully instant death by smashing into the ground as opposed to burning alive. The streets of new York filled some lucky people were running away from the building they just escaped. Other people were running towards the building screaming for the husbands their wives their dads their moms their brothers etc. Watching it on tv. Knowing how real it was and fearing more attacks everyone broke down. Grown men I worked with who you would have thought way to tough to cry actually broke down in sobs watching the tv. Showing the children's faces screaming for one of their parents while the other parent held them tightly and collapsed to the ground in hysterics. 9-11. Is a time when the entire country. No matter the color or age or sex or orientation. We all silently banded together. We cried together. We gave hugs to total strangers. Trying to co.fort them and ourselves. 9-11 showed us that as a country when we stand together. We are able to overcome the harsh realities of a cruel world. Sadly it didn't hold long. Everyone remembers 9-11 but with less emotion now. Except for the families that were directly impacted from it.
I think 9/11 was one of those things that everybody remembers where they were when they heard about it, also the deaths of John Lennon and Princess Di are similarly remembered by most (who are old enough) in the same way.
I was in a business meeting at the time and someone came in to tell us. We have some friends in California and I remember the genuine pain and distress that was apparent in the e-mails we exchanged shortly after.
Sadly most of those who experienced 9/11 as victims are now dead. I saw it on the day as it happened on the TV from the UK.I will always remember it.
