Did food prices increase during the great depression ?

supply and demand

This is what I did: Do a search of food prices 1929 to 1935. It will show you a chart with what prices were doing in that time frame. As others said, they went down. No one was buying much and no one could afford to spend a lot, even for basic commodities. Everybody was just barely getting by in those years.

No, I think they went down. Farmers were still producing but inflation was at an astronomical rate. Then there was a huge unemployment rate because manufacturing plants laid off million. Farmers were still producing but there was no money to pay for the food. Grocery stores had to drop their prices to try to get poor people to buy their food. A lot of food was never sold and was probably thrown away.

As my grandparents, who lived through the Depression, told me, the prices went down rather than up. But then, so many people were out of work that they simply couldn't afford the necessities. My grandfather got work as a Postal Clerk, and so his family was considered well off, and was able to help those less fortunate.

No; they dropped a huge amount (its called deflation) but so did wages, etc. The real issue was the lack of jobs and the charities being overwhelmed (causing people to expand government to make safety nets such as Social Security).

According to my interesting link that although the prices at that time seem very cheap to us,its a paradox they were expensive to the people then. More of interest in the link.

Down there was no money to buy anything. My grandparents said people actually starved to death standing on their feet when they fell they were dead. They told horror stories because they lived it.

They actually went down.

No, of course not.
