I have no doubt she will assert that the hippie/anti-war movement in the 70's helped to stop the Vietnam War. This is simply not true though. What that movement was really arguing for was a stop to the draft. Once that was ceased in 1973, the anti-war movement lost almost all of its momentum. Besides this fact, their protects did nothing to stop the war, nor did they intend that. It was merely meant to get the U.S. out of the conflict. Even after the U.S. ended their involvement, the war, death and destruction continued through Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Unfortunately and somewhat telling, the anti-war movement seemed to care little and did NOTHING to speak out about the continued deprivations of the North Vietnamese military and communist movement across Southeast Asia.
The Feels Like I'm Fixing To Die Rag, by Country Joe McDonald, or, Country Joe and the Fish as they were called then HAS to be mentioned. It was the rallying cry for the Viet Nam war. Anti war songs drew political attention from the newer younger voters, putting New people in political office between '76 and '84. Now do some research.
Explore if there were anti-war songs before the Vietnam era (were there anti-war songs about Korea?, World War Two? Doubtful.) Explore how the Vietnam protest movement inspired a whole generation of singers who wrote anti-war songs. Analyze the lyrics of three songs in the context of the year, what was going on in the news and the singer's background (folk, rock, pop music?) Explore if anti-war songs were hits or not?
Universal Soldier by Donovan...Masters of War by Bob Dylan...Kill the Dove by Joan Baez. While none of these songs were 'propaganda' in the negative sense of the word, they shared certain buzz words, expressions, stereotypes and cultural references that makes propaganda work and promotes a belief system for or against certain people, institution or act by governments or individuals. Check out how propaganda can influence the start of a movement when all of the pieces of potential protest are already present.
