US tornado stronger than Hiroshima bomb - Appalling headline!?

Hiroshima is the standard litmus test so to speak when it comes to destructive powers.

It has pretty well become "generic" and to tell the truth millions of people have become so inured to it that something of this comparison doesn't even register on the bad taste list.

There are many things these days that have become the norm whereas a mere thirty or forty years ago it would leave any audience aghast.

Comparisons to Hiroshima are that common nowadays.

But I do agree with you; it seems a little too strong a comparison for good taste.

it is an appalling comparison

of course, it is true in one sense - that the energy release by the Hiroshima bomb was a known amount, measured in kilotons of TNT

however, there is no comparison which can take into account the long term horror of radiation poisoning, and the immediate flash damage of an atomic bomb, which means that people well away from the epicentre receive horrific burns.

so - it's not only appalling taste to compare the two, but it is also like comparing apples and oranges. the two are quite different.

I imagine the comment was intended to address the destructive force of the tornado.I don't think it was taking into account the horrors of Hiroshima the loss of life and illness that were the long term aftermath .I think that the reference was to give people a visual comparison to how strong this tornado was.

Not really. The Hiroshima bomb wasn't that powerful when compared to the destructive force of mother nature. However it's a bit of a tasteless comparison, and in most cases, an over-exaggeration.

I agree.

Comparing something which cost a few lives with a bomb which killed nearly 100,000 is deeply insensitive and callous.

One being man-made and the other being natural is irrelevant. They both cause havoc. The paper is comparing the DAMAGE, not the event.

Not so much appalling as it is ignorant to compare the two. But I would venture to ask, how is it "stronger"?

Does anyone else agree that this is a horrible comparison!

You can not compare a natural disaster with a man made one. The circumstances were completely different. Completely insensitive that around the world it was compared to Hiroshima.

I know this has passed, but I am bringing this up because a friend of mine mentioned it today and we wanted to see who feels the same way.
