If I told you my Hello Kitty calendar predicts the end of the world will be Dec. 31, 2012 because that's the last page of the calendar you'd think I was a loon. But who am I to argue with Hello Kitty? She's been around a long time, and surely she should know when the end of the world is, right?
Well, that's exactly what people are saying about the Mayan calendar. Yes, it does end on December 21, 2012 and yes that seems rather odd...until you realize a few things.
First of all, the Mayan calendar is not the same as ours. In fact, the first version of our modern calendar system didn't show up until nearly 1000 years AFTER the Mayans finished carving their calendar. The Ma yan calendar is tracking the path of stars around the night sky. The longest of these paths is called The Great Cycle and is due to end on...our December 21 2012. December 22 2012 would be the first day of their next Great Cycle which lasts for another 10,000 years. In other words, if the ancient Mayans were alive today, they'd be preparing for one heck of a New Great Cycle's Eve party. I'm also sure that like many of us, they would go down to the mall and buy their next Great Cycle calendar. Perhaps something in a nice polished green granite this time?
Second, while the Mayans did write a lot of prophecies, none of them talk about the end of the world coinciding with the end of their Great Cycle.
So why all the (American) prophets about 2012? Look at their websites and you'll notice they all have something in common. A "Donate now!" button linked to their Paypal account.
Yup. That's right. 2012 is just a giant new-age marketing bonanza. Look at how many books, magazine articles, TV shows, movies and other stuff that you can buy related to 2012. Once December 22nd dawns, these self-proclaimed prophets will simply name a new date and swear that this time, they've got it right.
I wonder what's going to happen to the Preppers though. The folks who have spent the majority of the past decade spending thousands - or hundreds of thousands - of dollars on food, supplies, ammo, and even entire underground bunkers all for the sake of preparing for a disaster that isn't going to happen based on their schedule, or, if it DOES happen, will be so catastrophic the majority of us (ie. "the lucky ones") will be vaporized before we even know what hit us.
Nothing will happen. People are getting worried because the Mayan calendar ends on the 21st, however like our calendar ends and restarts on January first, theirs ends dec. 21st and would restart the 22nd. Nothing will happen in 15 days
No I think they meant that on the 21st a new electro fence kit hits the market to rid the world of squirrels. but they will be back they always do.
