Why was Hurricane Sandy considered a "superstorm"?

adjectives are added depending the mood prevailing and devastation it causes

It was called a superstorm because it merged with an Arctic jet stream. It actually would have been worse if she had hit at 8 pm, because that's when high tide was, but Sandy ended up moving quicker than expected so it hit before high tide, which mitigated the damage slightly (it was still really bad, but it probably would have been even worse). The Arctic jet stream is what made it a so-called superstorm, to the best of my knowledge. Look it up

Hurricane Sandy hit at the worst possible time. During a full moon with high tides and a cold front blowing down from Canada hitting the storm head on. The result was massive flooding and it stalled along the coast instead of moving inland and rapidly breaking up.

superBIG.

the weather is starting to get like the weather in The Day after Tomorrow.

I am assuming that Sandy is being considered a "superstorm", by the media because of the damage it caused, but it barely qualified as a hurricane at landfall with its winds at 89mph.
