Why was 9/11 in a way... a big deal?

Posted at: 2015-04-20
I am english and sadly not one of "we" but you know America acted with astonishing restraint on that terrible day. Something she should always be proud of.

You know, the asker just cant compare 9/11 which was a terrorist act against thousands of civilians, with.

Hiroshima which was an act of war against what at that time was a cruel and determined enemy. It saved the lives of up to a million american soldiers. She did the right thing, terrible as it was.

You would have had to watch it LIVE to get the magnitude of it because NO ONE KNEW what was GOING to HAPPEN NEXT. They didn't know if there were going to be more attacks in other big cities across the U.S or not. It was an attack on the WORLD really, because there were 53 COUNTRIES represented in the WTC Twin Towers. A NATION was in SHOCK, and you could say the WORLD was too.

the fully jet fuelled 747's going 500 and 600 mph. and the disbelief of one crashing into WTC1 then minutes later WTC2

the plane crashing into the Pentagon

Capitol Hill and the White House being EVACUATED

the plane crashing in Pennsylvania and the huge CRATER with nothing left of the PLANE

the COLLAPSING of the TWIN TOWERS, 1,400 feet high

New York looked like a war zone of ASH

people died just from the DEBRIS CLOUD

the MASS EXODUS of people WALKING out of Manhattan across the bridge

the faces of the rescue workers, police, firefighters heading into the building and never coming out

the wreckage of the TWIN TOWERS, some of it 7 STORIES HIGH

3,240 DEAD, 10,000 UNIDENTIFIED HUMAN REMAINS, only 1,500 could be IDENTIFIED

Regarding Hiroshima, that was during WWII, this was only after the U.S. did bombing raids on Osaka, Tokyo and Kyoto as a warning to surrender. Emperor Hirohito did not surrender even after Hiroshima, so Truman ordered Nagasaki and he finally surrendered. The bomb arguably saved millions of lives, stopping the war from continuing because Japan would have sacrificed every person to fight the Allied Powers.

One was done during WWII, ever heard of WWII. The other was done during a time of peace. Hiroshima was directly involved in the building of the airplanes the Kamakazi were using to attack ships. The people in the WTC were just doing their daily jobs, no military application at all. Get it yet. Japan attacked the U.S. dragging the nation into the war. The U.S. didn't attack bin Laden first. Understand.

Bin laden hit more than just the WTC.

There's another plane that hit the Pentagon and a fourth that went down in a field before reaching its target.

Plus the fact that people from 60 different countries died, not just Americans.

It was also the first foreign attack on US soil since WW2 and the most destructive since the burning of the Niagara Frontier and Washington DC in the War of 1812 in retaliate for US troops burning towns & villages in Canada.

The atomic bombing of Japan was a big deal in a totally different way.

It was done to end the bloodiest war in all of human history: World War Two.

For the Japanese, losing two cities saved them from all being wiped out:

Well in defense to the Hiroshima and Nagasaki events, Japan had invaded and attacked Pearl Harbor, but to completely level two cities is in a sense overreacting, but I personally view this as a necessary course of action for two reasons. One this put an end to the war with Japan, and we were able to see exactly what this sort of power is capable of, though that's not an entirely positive reason. As for 9/11 it was a big deal as not only was the one plane hijacked to attack the towers, but another was hijacked to hit the Pentagon. On top of that two other planes were taken over. Anytime a threat or act is made on national security it's a big deal.

Yet another ignorant troll trying to compare Hiroshima and 9/11...

Go learn some history, go learn the definition of "terrorism", and learn what actually happened on 9/11 (hint: it involved more than just 2 buildings...)

America tends to stay butthurt for long periods of time and is always chanting the phrase "NEVER FORGET" for every "big" Tragedy that happens every year. Remember the movie theatre massacre sure you do, but have you thought about it at all in the past few weeks? Probably not. America as a whole needs to move on. 9//11 was a terrible event but it honestly hasnt effected me at ALL. And if it did I'd eventually have to get past it. Its usually the media that trys to make it a big deal to distract us from other things.

9/11 is still an open wound and will continue to be

until such time as the TRUTH comes out.

9/11/2001 was a FALSE FLAG OPERATION

mainstream media functioning as a PROPAGANDA MACHINE

& our politicians committing treason as if it were their hobby.

GIVE ME A BREAK! AMERICA has a serious problem here.

Why do silly people compare 9/11 to the atomic bombings of Japan. One has nothing to do with the other whatsoever and if you had even the slightest clue about history you would know the Hiroshima and Nagasaki raids were not even the deadliest or most destructive air raids of WW2. The only thing that makes them "special" is split atoms were used instead of chemical reactions in order to kill and destroy.

Let me give you an explanation that a 8 year old can understand. Let's compare apples and oranges.

1) Apples: In war, believe it or not, the goal of war is not death and destruction although those are two most commonly used tactics. The intent of the A-bombings was to cripple their war effort and destroy the civilian population will to support the war. This was done for mostly military purposes as what would happen if we show what we could do to an industrial city. Nothing political about it and if it was, then the A-bomb would have been dropped on Tokyo and Kyoto instead. After all, the goal is to WIN THE WAR, not to change foreign policies like 9/11.

2) Oranges: Terrorism - hopes to affect political change through deliberate and intentional use of violence against civilians and civilian targets and that what 9/11 achieves. Because of this, there is never any excuse for it.

1) Apples: We were at war with the nation of Japan when we used the atomic bombs.

2) Oranges: Like Pearl Harbor, we were not at war with any nation at the time of 9/11 attacks.

1) Apples: Both Hiroshima and Nagasaki were manufacturing centers producing weapons for the Japanese military; Hiroshima was the HQ of the 2nd General Army which commanded the defense of all southern Japan with 40,000 soldiers in the city and Nagasaki was a huge industrial center with factories producing ordnance, military equipment, aircraft parts and other war materials. Both cities had 70% of the civilian populace working in the war effort in factories, workshops, and other buildings that was making weapons of war and that such this made them both legitimate targets. Japan had placed them in the middle of civilian-populated areas, in a sense, they were used as human shields.

2) Oranges: The WTC was not a manufacturing center and was not targeted by an enemy military and/or terrorist organizations to disrupt U.S. manufacturing. The WTC was clearly not mingled within the civilian-populated areas as it was out in the open which makes it easier for a single hijacked airliner to attack. Most people killed in the WTC were not soldiers and/or civilian workers involved in the war effort, unlike Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

1) Apples: The people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was given a warning to leave prior to the air raids. Leaflets were dropped by U.S. B-29s on both cities accompanied by radio broadcasts naming the cities listed for destruction before the bombings. http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/ops/hi... http://www.damninteresting.com/ww2-ameri...

2) Oranges: The people of NYC and WTC did not receive a warning from terrorists that the WTC was going to be attacked, not even warned by leaflets, TVs, radios, computers, and anything like that at all. This is exactly like the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese military, both events were done without a declaration of war and without warning.

1) Apples: Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed during WWII as precision bombing did not exist at that time so carpetbombing (including the A-bombs) was the only way to get things done. More Japanese civilians died in the firebombings of Tokyo on the night of March 9-10, 1945 than those who died in the A-bombings. What is the difference? Death is death. Destroying cities was conducted by every nation in WWII, including Britain, Germany, and other belligerents of the war. The only difference one bomb could flatten the whole city in seconds as opposed to using thousands of conventional bombs in a few hours.

2) Oranges: WWII was over 50 years ago by the time of the 9/11 attacks. The world isn't the same as it was back then. As ludicrous as it sounds, rules and technology of warfare has also changed as well.

1) Apples: Bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki was considered necessary to bring a quick end to the war. The alternative would have been a military invasion of the Japanese main islands. The U.S. military estimated this would take months with several hundreds of thousand U.S. dead, and well over a million Japanese. By comparison, a few hundreds of thousand Japanese dead and ending the war in days, as opposed to million of U.S. and Japanese dead for months, seemed like a good idea.

2) Oranges: The 9/11 attacks were only intended to do two things: Kill people and terrorize the population without any military purposes. It didn't save any lives, it hurt more people than it saved and caused the U.S. to start the endless war on terror. Also, it didn't just killed Americans, 372 people from 60 countries also died in the 9/11 attacks.

The analogy between 9/11 and Hiroshima/Nagasaki is ridiculously stupid and idiotic as those two do not compare. Japan had the chance to surrender, they refused, and not one U.S. life had to die needlessly for the stupid conflict the Japanese themselves had started after four years of the Pacific War.

What I never understood is why Bin Laden hit 2 buildings in New York and we act like it was the worst thing in the world, but we don't even give a crap about the bomb we dropped wiping out the whole city of Hiroshima...

I don't mean to offend anyone. I was born and currently live in America, just so I don't sound like some angry Asian. I just don't get it...

It was and still is the largest and most devastating terrorist attack on the United States, and also the pentagon was hit as well.

It's just the media. They hyped it up, but it was a pretty big deal, killed a lot of folks... But so did the bombs, but than again the bombings happend in 1945 or somesh*t like that. So I guess it's up too you to think, "was it really a big deal" ... I say "nah" when so much other bullsh*t happend, and is still happening around the world.

people dont really give a crap about we do because we're hypocritical f*cks idk society is f'ed up and theres nothing we can do about it
