he was obviously casing the neighborhood to steal more, and resented being identified and caught. he tired to get way, when zimmerman called the police. zimmerman kept him in his sight, so martin attacked him.

The logical answer to me is that after upon confrontation, some heated words were exchanged, things escalated until they got totally out of hand.
