Notoriety. He craved it. He craved attention. He didn't get it from Mommy and Daddy. If I recall, his family home had pictures of his siblings, but not him. Gee, great way to make a kid feel good eh?
He is mentally ill and he was delusional at the time.
He wanted to feel self important, and make a place for himself in history.
He was/is a sociopath.
