I was digging my allotment
Working on a farm in Michigan. Someone came out to the field and told us about the terrorist attacks about 15 minutes after the second plane flew into a building. Everyone stopped what they were doing and crowded around a radio for the rest of the morning. There was no TV.
I was in school- I was 9 and in 4th grade at the time. I also lived about 40 minutes away from the Pentagon. I remember the teacher who was next door to my class came into our room and started whispering to my teacher. That was when we all knew something was going on because they looked so upset and were obviously trying to keep something from us. They didn't tell us anything all day. A lot of kids' parents came and picked them up early, though mine didn't (they later said they thought I was safer in the school than I would be anywhere else). So I didn't find out everything until I got home that afternoon. I remember riding the bus home, and talking to my neighbor who rode with me. She must have overheard teachers talking and she told me that she knew it was something about plane crashes and that a plane had crashed in Washington, DC. After I got off the bus I ran into my house and found my mom, and my dad who had been sent home from work early, in front of the TV. I asked them what happened and right then, I saw the plane crashing into the tower and my mom explained it all to me. I didn't really know what the World Trade Center was at that time and I had never heard of terrorists before. So I was scared at the idea that there were people who wanted to attack America and especially that one attack (the Pentagon) was so close to home. Later, my older brother, who was a freshman in high school at the time, came home, and he was all relieved, because they had been allowed to watch the news at school and they had let him call home to make sure our dad was okay. Our dad had worked in the Pentagon when we first moved to Virginia. By the time of 9/11, he was working in a different building, but he still went to the Pentagon sometimes for meetings. So thank God he wasn't in there that day. All of us spent most of the rest of the day just watching the news, which was very upsetting- especially the part where people were jumping from the towers. Then, school was closed the next day since some kids in the area had lost their parents. It was a sad and scary time. I didn't personally know anyone who died or who lost a loved one but my heart goes out to all who did.
Running a bar in Liverpool. I had opened up for lunch and a cutomer came in said something about the first plane. I turned on the TV and we all watched live as the second plane hit the second tower.
In My bedroom playing Tony Hawk on the Playstation 1.
I was in my house watching television & so I caught it live. For some weeks, I felt traumatised looking back on the scenes, in particular, those that were at the windows flagging for help knowing to me they had none, none at all; in addition, watching people throw themselves off the building on the day disturbed me. Somehow, I was able to accept the situation as a tragedy unequalled to many in modern times. It was unexpected, incomprehensible & vile. The knowledge that there was one survivor in the news this year blows my mind - how so miraculous !
I was at school. Due to the time difference in the UK, I got home not long after the buildings fell. Saw the aftermath on the television at my Grandparent's as I was going straight from school to their's that afternoon.
