There are far too many yahoos and gun toting redneck types in the USA for guns to ever be controlled. The Second Amendment was introduced at a time when guns were a survival necessity. That doesn't apply any more, but try and tell that to the gun happy dickheads and the criminals.
Hopefully never. And a ban on guns would only make things worse. Look at the prohibition era, we banned alcohol and it created a major mob/mafia scene.

Banning guns won't make them just disappear.
Just this month a shooting at the LAX airport in LA. The shooter stormed the airport with a military-style AR15 assault machine gun and killed a guard and injured a few others.
When will we finally wise up and repeal the second amendment? How many more deaths will it take?
