Bin Laden's family didn't want his body, and the US government was worried that if they simply buried him on land, Al Qaeda or other extremist groups, would turn the grave into a shrine, glorifying his actions. So, although it's not normally done, the government gave him a formal burial at sea. This way, no one can use the burial site or body for their own political means.
Al Qaeda is satisfied that this is actually what happened.

This was to avoid making his grave a shrine for young, impressionable Muslims who might be moved to a life of terrorism. There was also the fact that accepting such a man's body was a feat that no country wished to accomplish (some may have, but the stigma this would have included (from much of the Western world) very likely dissuaded them). I mean: this was the man responsible for incomprehensible acts of terror, which put an incredible number of innocent civilians to an earlier death. Osama bin Laden did not deserve a grave on American soil.

Our government were concerned the burial spot of bin Laden's body would be considered a holy shrine-----attracting thousands of new, young terrorists to his filthy insult to humanity. So, yes, his body was dumped into the ocean.
As far as I am concerned we can trust what the US government tells us although I am not an American. We accept what they say unless and until there is any more reliable evidence to the contrary. That seems the fairest way. Muslims cant be cremated.
