They don't serve any purpose,and I am very pleased we don't have any of them in England.
There are very few actual Truthers on either subject. Mostly what they are is trolls.
On the evening of May 2, 2011 when news began to leak (there's the government utterly failing to keep secrets again) that Osama bin Laden had been killed tens of thousands of people spontaneously showed up at places like the White House and Ground Zero to celebrate in the streets. The 9/11 Truth Movement when they plan events well in advance at Ground Zero are lucky to get more than a few dozen people to show up, no matter how nice the weather or what psuedo-celebrity appearances have been promised. In the face of this observation, there can be no argument that 9/11 Truthers are a tiny, literally negligible minority.
They make a lot of noise on the internet because they have nothing better to do (statistically, your average 9/11 Truther is an under-employed, under-educated young male - I imagine Sandy Hook Truthers are similar) and they crave the attention. Very, very few of them do anything other than post annoying rants on obscure internet forums. They never take any real action, a strong indication it is all about them and not about finding the TRUTH.
We have a few fairly active 9/11 Truther Trolls on YA and they all behave pretty much the same way. One copies and pasts the same short, batsh!t crazy - mostly in all-CAPS - to every 9/11 question, whether it has anything to do with the question being asked or not. Another one posts the same long-winded and copied and pasted rant to every 9/11 question - again whether it addresses the question or not - replete with the obligatory links to evidence from the University of Youtubia. The third, when he is not busy accusing me of being every non-conspiracy theorist on the internet also posts the same copied and pasted rant to every 9/11 related question, again reglardless of whether or not it addresses the question. His rants are full of the usual "unanswered questions" that were answered years ago and a million times over and the usual links to deluded people like Richard Gage and batsh!t crazy ones like Rob Balsamo's 9/11 Pilots group. None of these guys produce anything original, anything of substance or anything that indicates evidence of synapses firing between those ears. Just endless, mindless miming of the anti-establishment party line. A lot of what they claim is even self-contradictory. Few of the other "fly-by Truthers" can reach past the level of "it was an inside job". And of course, none of them do anything about any of it other than endlessly post their bizarre canned rants.
None of them is interested in the real truth because they ignore it when presented. None of them seems capable of grasping the truth because they are unable to process and assemble reasonable arguments. That is just beyond their capacity.
If someone is wed to a conspiracy theory then logic, science, and any other information that subverts their religious belief in the conspiracy will simply be discounted. Any testimony or evidence that does not fit the theory is simply lumped in with the evil forces driving events and discounted. Why? because the smug superiority of "being in on the secret" is intoxicating and addictive and a clearly identified villain is comforting. In their minds, its them standing bravely against "the man," while the foolish masses go blindly about their business. Their minds are simply incapable of processing above that simple black-and-white level.
