The sinking of the White Ship. The reason it is considered a disaster is it meant that the only remaining legitimate child of King Henry i was his daughter, Matilda. He therefore decided that she should become queen when he died - which didn't go down too well with a lot of the nobles (who wanted a man in charge) and led to Stephen seizing the throne and an 18 year civil war in England (named The Anarchy by historians).

the white ship sank i know this as it forms the background to the first of the cadfael stories, cadfael retuning as a solider from the crusades, acts as a guard for a petitioner to the king's court of common pleas, but the petition is never heard as the white ship sinks in 1120 killing the heir to the thrown and half of the nobility of england.
