Should 999 be made a premium phone number...?

Apparently, it would stop the silly calls if it cost 50p to phone...? Really...?

It was on the radio, but I didn't catch the name of the idiot who suggested it...

A guy called David Hamilton, I think he is a policeman. What a stupid idea, Hoax callers should be given a very hefty fine, not penalise the public who genuinely need help.

that will never happen! my dog sat on the phone and his bum must of been on 9 and it rang 999, i didn't know until I heard someone shouting hello hello hello on the over end, they told me off! but I blame the dog.

we have 111 here in the north east, it's for an emergency that isn't enough to be a 999 emergency, you couldn't make it up.

i would pay 50p like.

some idiot will probably suggest means testing it!

Oh yes £1 .50 per minute when a call can last 5 minutes.

So what are crank calls... "my cat is stuck up a tree, or i cannot turn my washer off,?

I was on the phone the other day for a sick relative and was asked hundreds of questions and it must have been 10 to 15 minutes before they finally sent the ambulance...

No absolutely not. Say you were in a car crash and your phone was out of credit, at the moment you can still call 999 but if you had to pay it could make the difference between life and death.

Instead they need to trace the hoax calls and fine them, make it a fixed fee like with speeding tickets, so that if you don't pay you have to go to court.

Regretfully I dont think 999 should be made a Premium number. While it may do as you say,the chance of not being able to make a call if required is too great.

Mental!! A crank call to 999 is a criminal offense so offenders should be prosecuted and punished. You can even have your phone line cut off for making a bogus call. Punishment should be the deterrent not charging everyone.

What a stupid idea. Even if it was workable, it wouldn't stop people calling any more than the outrageous directory enquires charges do (calls to 118 numbers are at least £2 even for a few seconds).

How on earth is this going to deter people from prank calling. This will cause a nuisance for the PUBLIC.

I called 118 directory enquiries and was charged £4, charging for emergency services would absolutely cruel if someone is very seriously ill or in a car crash

no - it should be a £500 fine for anyone making silly calls automatically sent to them

No! That is going TOOOO far!

The person who drafted this one should be SACKED just for saying it out loud!

No. Hammer the guilty ones hard.
