His name was Walter Bygraves.He changed it to to Max in honour of max Miller. He wasnt Jewish.He was a cockney from London from Catholic parents. He is my generation,well a bit old for me but he was popular when I was a teenager. He could tell inoffensive clean jokes. Edit Walter Bygraves I should have said.
