Have you ever experienced a natural disaster before?

I've had a couple of scary experiences with near misses by tornadoes and flooding and experienced one really small earthquake. The earthquake was just kinda of a "What the heck was that?" sort of thing. The flooding was expected and didn't get into the house, just kept us from leaving the area for a couple of days. The near misses with the tornadoes were pretty scary. The house shook and water was blown in under doors and the bottom plate on the exterior walls on 2 sides of the house, but after it was over and I came out of my hiding place (the 1st floor bathroom) and could see outside, it appeared that the twister actually lifted off the ground about 50 yards from my house. The feeling I got when I realized how lucky I was that it didn't hit the house is much more memorable than the terror I know I was feeling while hiding in that bathroom. Same thing with the other tornado, although I didn't even realize it WAS a tornado until the next morning. The sound was a lot different than the first one, but I think it may have just been because of the location. The first one I was in a rural area, on top of a hill. The second one was in a town that sits in a valley.

I live in the mountain of south central PA. Back in 95 the remains of a tropical storm came through and dumped 20 inches of rain in a few short hours. My driveway became a 4 ft deep ditch in places and I saw a car floating down the road. There were places where water broke through the pavement on the road and was spurting like a geyser into the air.

Earthquakes. You just hold still and see how intense it gets. Only once in my 22 years here have I felt the need to shelter in a doorway; we ended up without a scratch or damage to anything.

I'm just curious. Natural disasters intrigue me and I'm really interested in learning about them, but I've never actually seen one in person, nor have I lived through it. The worst natural disaster I've been in is a thunderstorm, and not even a black-out causing one- just one that ruined the grass.

I'm really curious as to how it feels to be in a natural disaster. What I mean by this is, how does it feel? How does the ground feel when the earth is shaking? What do tsunamis feel like? What did you have to do to hide from that tornado?

Thanks!
