It'd be like me pointing at your wall calendar and claiming December 31, 2012 is the end of the world because it's the end of your calendar.
In reality, the Mayan calendar is not based on the same system as ours. In fact, their calendar system predates ours by centuries. Their system tracks the movement of stars, which they call cycles. Their calendar ends because it's the end of their current cycle which covers roughly 10,000 of our years. Why would you create a second 10,000 year calendar centuries before you needed it? Does your calendar even cover the rest of the decade? Yet, you know there's going to be a 2013-2019 right? Furthermore, the Mayans - who really did write a lot of prophecies - never wrote anything about the world ending at the end of their cycle.
Of course, what use are actual facts when people can make profits by making movies, TV shows and books about "the end of the world"? Heck, think of all the money they can make selling doomsday supplies!
So while a small number of people may do something stupid on 12/21, I doubt it will be any larger than the group of people that do stupid things on any other day.
The same was predicted for Y2K- when 1999 became 2000. The worst that happened was one small area of Scotland was without cellular phone towers as a computer was slow to reset.
The nutters who believe this will either be at home, on a rooftop howling or in a church. There is nothing to worry about.
I believe that on 12/22/12, we'll have new doomsday predictions.

I am soo worried that since the predicted doomsday end of the world date has been predicted people may go crazy and do stuff that may harm us. I don't think the world will end but I have had a lot of anticipated anxiety since. Do you think I have anything to worry about?
