Most Australians live in cities, and don't have any cows or other farm livestock. Australian farms are generally very large indeed, so a few Australian farmers have lots of cows, and even more sheep.
Looking at total numbers of people, cattle, sheep, etc., in Australia, and doing the maths to give average livestock owned per person makes no sense at all in Australian society. Of course, this doesn't stop people around the world making jokes about the alleged 'close relationships' between Australian people and their sheep. (Ditto New Zealanders & the Welsh) Google 'sheep jokes' to see.

It's a complete continent with a wide variety of protein foodstuff on the hoof.
