With the end of the Cold War, the chances of a global nuclear war occurring became very very slim.
Even during the Cold War, both the US and USSR knew that an all out nuclear war would turn the Earth into an uninhabitable radioactive cinder.
As for a limited exchange due to oil or other resources, that also seems a bit unlikely since it's a bit hard to take someone's resources after you've turned them radioactive.
It's a lot less likely now than during the Cold War, however, it could still happen. Pakistan has nuclear technology as does Iran. These countries aren't exactly know for their peaceful, loving ways. It would take quite a bit now to force nuclear war but it still is a possibility. If it does happen it will be total nuclear apocalypse on a global scale.
Of course it "could" happen; but as long as sane people are in control in the PRC, Pakistan, India, Russia, France, GB, and the USA ( opps, forgot about Israel ), then it shall not.
Shall we play a game?
Me and my biology teacher were debating about this along with a friend of mine. I play Fallout, and the idea of global nuclear war got me thinking about it for a bit. I believe maybe a limited of nuclear weapons, maybe on the battlefield seems most possible right now. Say between India and Pakistan seems most likely if tensions do not stop. In Fallout, it is said that Global nuclear exchange happened because of every oil well in the world running dry and there being no alternatives, countries waged war for the very last drop. I might be able to see global level if oil ever ran out, but there are many alternatives and maybe a synthetic solution for oil. We would quickly find a alternative in our world (electricity, paper, cooking oil, ethanol and others) before we would ever go to global nuclear war over oil like how they did in the Fallout world. And even then. We know if we ever have a global nuclear war, it's Mutually Assured Destruction on every side, no one will win.
What do you think about this? I know Global will probably not happen. But if a peak oil crisis happens. What are the chances then?
