Why are people frightened by the truth?

The ego dislike anything that challenges it's subjective reality. Since almost everyone identifies with the ego as 'me' it is only natural that the self is reluctant to accept the truth. If the ego had any humility at all it would not be offended by it.

Too many people can't handle the reality of certain situations. If something contradicts what you were led to believe, the natural reaction is to deny the facts. Unfortunately, this happens quite often, and there isn't really much anyone can do about it.

I think you are mixing apples and oranges. It is fair to say that people can be afraid of the truth. Of course they can, many elements of reality are scary.

But I think you overstep to present these conspiracy theory examples as "truths". Obviously they are not generally accepted or else they would be, well, generally accepted. Some pretty smart people investigated each of those things and the general, and most likely correct, conclusions do not support those conspiracy theories.

Ironically, the truths that people might indeed be scared of may be that one person, or one group of people can do so much damage to the rest of us and apparently we are not able to defend ourselves from that. Much better to thing that it would take a Great Big Conspiracy to do so much damage. Not one nut with a gun and bad childhood.

Our imaginations are much more confortable then the cold hard reality of the real world.

Our beliefs have a habbit of growing "roots" in our mind if not CHALLENGED early enough.

Its like trying to pull out a tree out of the ground after it has fully grown.

Its a shock to the system.

Believing a lie often takes away the need for them to be responsible and take action and risk something to actually stand up for the truth.

I suppose I am frightened to acknowledge truth because there is too much mystery and uncertainty about so much in my mind. Not the least of which is existence itself. I may be getting to literal with the word "truth" but it seems impossible for us to detach ourselves from the subjectivity of our perception. So this concept of an objective truth seems incomprehensible.

It's clitche, but sometimes the truth hurts and is painful

Truth is hard to tolerate and digest. You are left with all the burden fall on your head at a time which is so hard to maintain instantly.

You should be the expert on this, considering all the ridiculous conspiracy theories you believe. So you tell us.

People would rather not know. Ignorance is bliss.

So many people will believe absurdities like the single bullet theory, the Building 7 collapse due to fires, the 'not a missile' TWA800 nonsense, etc. Why is that? The evidence is there but its like the Emperors New Clothes, people are more comfortable with a lie...why is that?
