Not all rivers are the same many flow quite fast and have white water below which are boulders heads can be smashed on. Some are of frigid water and hypothermia can set in quickly. Some have very steep banks and the fall alone can kill folks.
I knew a guy who drowned in reservoir age 17. he was a good swimmer, but the danger is that when you get to the middle the water temperature hits you, you get into trouble, panic and drown, which is what happened.
Insufficient personal risk assessment
Complacency
lack of swimming skills
Lack of parental supervision
lack of personal awareness
Insufficient preparation and planning
Peer pressure
Stupidity
Naivety
the list is probably endless. One or a combination of these inked to an inability to breathe under water (as has been previously highlighted).
it is also possible that when you were younger you were less aware of these issues in the media.
People have always died in rivers, the sea, and lakes. It's just that this summer the media have reported it more. Thousands die in car accidents every year and it never makes the headlines.
Because the Kids either CAN'T Swim- or They're horsing around where They SHOULDN'T be !! And like the famous Mario Puzo once said; " Fools Die." :o
it's people doing things they are not used to doing so they do not recognize the dangers
Because most of the time these people are drunk (teenagers)
